Model Airplane Books

Airplane Books I like

In this day of ARF's, building is becoming somewhat of a lost art. If you are interested in building your own model airplanes, there is still good information available. I have found the following model airplane books to be enjoyable to read as well as extremely useful. Check them out - you might like them too.

Flying Models

This is a wonderful book. If you are just getting started with model airplanes, Flying Models has the information you need to get started right. It covers rubber, CO2, and electric powered models, both free flight and "micro RC." In other words, models at the smaller end of the spectrum. The author (Don Ross) writes in a style that is easy to follow and enjoyable to read.

The book starts out with an overview of the tools and materials you will need to start building your own models airplanes. Subsequent chapters cover various ways to power your model (electric, CO2, compressed air, and rubber), building and covering techniques (including sheet foam construction and vacuum forming), flight trimming, and even information on carving your own propellers. The cover bills the book as "Tips & Techniques for Beginner & Expert" and is correct on both counts. If you are a beginner, this book will get you off to a good start, yet it also has enough information to get you well on your way to becoming an expert modeller. If you've been flying ARF's and would like to add something new to your modeling hobby, I highly recommend this book. You won't be disappointed.
